  12. Hi,
I have cleared the 1st round of NIFT n now im preparing for the studio test at a coaching centre in Delhi. I read in ur blog (and in some others too) that the write up should preferably be in a tabular forn, highlighting the features of the model that has been created. But the faculty at my coaching, who is a NIFT Delhi alumni says there should be an interesting and different concept behind ur model.

Eg: we had to design a crown for a Miss Universe. A girl designed a crown for an alien Miss Universe who is like a superwoman for the aliens n has to save their planet from humans. This concept was more appreciated than other ‘usual’, though beautiful crowns. Everyone in my coaching comes up with amazing n unique concepts for their models but usually do not have any specific feature in them. I am realy confused. Should i focus on giving it a good n unique concept or
unique features that can be written clearly in the write up?

    Pl help.
    Thanku

  13. Concept and unique features is NOT contradictory. A concept offers throws up unique features as it gives you direction. For example if you design a sofa on the “concept” of bed+sofa.. you can add ‘features” like pillow+cushions, collapsible night lamp on the armchair, etc etc

Features are often ‘functional’. So a crown that can serve no purpose apart from aesthetics is best based on concept alone. Concepts like nature.. then you can add some flower/leaf kind of elements in it; or concept of world unity where there be cross-linking type elements; or concept of modernity where you can use geometric shapes…

Obviously the write-up i secondary to what you make.

  14. no classes being held. that was last year.

  15. no workshop. tht was last year.

  16. workshop was last year.

  17. no.. workshop was last year.

  18. Okay.
But what i meant by concept was that my teacher insists on giving a ‘deeper meaning’ to the write-up, building up a story around that concept, which obviously cant be in tabular form. It becomes like a 50 word essay with use of decorated words and language. I don’t think the panel that comes for evaluation would read every such write-up, would they?

Like, most of the write-ups of products made by this guy at my class are in the form of a letter where the product is usually gifted to someone by the person who’s writing the letter. We had to design a paper weight for Bill Gates n he wrote in his writeup that it has been designed by a 7yr old kid to thank Gates for making computer..and he attached a small letter along with it written in a kiddish hand writing.

So that’s my main concern- writing in points n telling about ur model or like a proper 50-60word essay?

    Thanks.
