NIFT Placements
A question that many candidates for NIFT ask me is - Where do NIFT students finally work ?
Well here is a list of placements that NIFT arranges or students arrange on their own. Please understand that this info has been collected from NIFT students and alumni all over India. I am not accountable for its correctness, in case somebody decided to give me wrong info. But let me assure you, everyone I asked had a decent level of sanity and as far as I know, the information is authentic and true.

PG placements
Hey, I'm working in United Colors of Benetton as a retail merchandiser for South east asia, enjoying my job to the fullest.
All the others are either working with brand or are in retail... doing good i believe. Companies where PG students got placed are -
GI, Shahi Exports, NIKE, Tommy, GAP, Li and Fung, Carrefour.
In india, PG students are placed very well in production as well as merchandising. After 3 yrs of experience in production, some of them are working as factory managers.
UG Technology placements
Well, the average package is around 2.8 per anum.
Students are hired as merchandisers, production managers, quality, retail.
Fashion Communication placements
I think most placements were in Visual Merchandising for Rs 20,000 average per month.
Ad Agency - JWT
Malvika Jain says - "Here are the companies that FC students have done internships in. So, you can get an idea of the possible jobs.
Styling and Fashion Journalism at magazines Elle, Marie Claire, F&A, Femina, Cosmopolitan.
Art person or Copywriter or Client servicing in Ad agencies like JWT, Ogilvy.
Graphic design at Whitelight, K factor, Illum design.
Photography with Ashish Chawla.

Fashion Design placements
Students have completed NIFT and joined Manish Malhotra and Puja Nayyar. FD students are placed all over India...mostly export houses.
Many joined as junior designers and many got straight as head designers, visual merchandisers, graphic designers. Some joined NIFT as faculty, some freelanced and a few started on their own!

Leather Design Placements
Many LD seniors have been placed in export houses as designers. Students het jobs as leather apparel / accessory / product designers in the following companies -

Textile Design placements
All are placed n doing gr8 with an avg. sal of 25k.
Students join not as junior designers, but as full fledged designers. They join the design team in the design studio and work there.
Madura, raymonds, ashima, arvind mills, portico, reliance, welspun,bharat vijay mills, bombay dyeing etc. along with numerous export houses
Knitwear Design Placements
You can eventually become a brand and a designer like Samant Chauhan.
I don't have an idea about all of them. But yes, I can give the names of a few of them. One person is working with Gokal Das exports. Other companies are Impulse, Monte Carlo and ITC Wills. For internship students are gong to Orient Craft, United Colors of Benetton, Madura Garments, India Terrain, Peter England and Raymonds.
Accessory Design Placements
Mostly jewellery like gili, geetangili, unidesign
Then lifestyle products like elvy, magppie, jindals .. and i think one in adidas.

I have qualified AIEEE B. arch Exam with All India Rank 1630 and Delhi State rank 181 in General category. So I expect B. Arch seat in some NITs including Bilra Inst of Tech, Mesra.
I have also Rank 67 ( Overall) and 20 (UPGL) in UPTech SEE B. Arch exam 2009. So I will also get a seat in UPTU.
Simultaneously I have cleared NIFT B. Des 2009 with 92 Rank in Gen Category.
PL. SUGGEST WHICH ONE I SHOULD GET ADMISSION , I.E., B. ARCH OR B. DES(NIFT), ALTHOUGH I CAN DO BETTER IN BOTH THE FIELD ?

@priyanka: i had the same dilemma about architecture and fashion communication. i was sooooooooooo confused. i asked an architecture graduate what he learnt each year, the syllabus. it was technical stuff liek adding brick and brick, bulding arches and pillars, famous buildings of the world. Finally I just followed my gut and went for fashion communication; though i had little idea about the stream. went for the glamour. had fun.

I know nothing about the councelling procedure and about the scope of the respective streams. Can you please tell me ,
How one should seer a career in streams except design and FC for a future, as packages are not so outgrown.
Whats the rank of streams among each other, i mean Does FC comes before AD and all?
And yeah.. a little about you too

Hi loony lampoonist,
check the post on NIFT counselling, centres and courses. For this go to the home page of this blog and click on NIFT admission page. FC and FD in delhi get taken first.. then the rest like AD follow. Read all the comments on all the NIFT posts and answers to them for more info.

i”ve secured 323 rank in general category and nw m in dilemma which bracnh to opt for… m intrestd in a branch that can offer me a secure job as well!

hey malvika!!!can we design clothes after doing textile design also??????????in your nift placements write up you have mentioned that people become do not become junior designers but rather full fledged desiners.does that imply that after doing textile i too can become a designer?????????

hi malvika i am applying for b.des course @ nift by nri seat ……..i have already given entrance test at nift & passed in first written test held this year but was rejected in second test that was studio test ………. so do u think i will get admission in nift this tym by nri seat ??????????

] the interviw pannel didnt ask me much qn, even didnt looked at my portfolio ,they wer looking tiered nd it was very thanda kindof interviw .w.in GD i did well. what u think do interviw really have 10% weightage or it is just written in prospectus!

Im a student in NIFT, Kannur 2008-2012 batch of B.F.Tech. (Apparel Production). Im at home for 2 months vaccations but finding it tough to sit free for long hours with no work to do. I’ve given xamz fr d II Semester and wish to go fr summer internship for a month…is it possible for 1st year students to go for internship…just for experience?? Im a residential of Gwalior, M.P., Is there any Garment Manufacturing Industry offering Internship Programs for NIFT students near my place??

@priyamvada: Hi, it is of course possible to do an internship at the end of first year. I did one. But look, you don’t have experience to talk of.. and just 1 year of education in fashion tech. so u will hav to say that u are very eager to learn on job, do all kinds of things and somehow promise that u won’t be coming in the way. Your sincere attitude will work bigtime here. Contact your seniors for info. i dont know abt export houses. ask your faculty. do it.. it will help you by giving you perspective even before second year. Say u are good with computers if you are.. with making phone calls etc. so that they can depend on you for some of those intern type jobs. come across as responsible to make up for inexperience.

Its gr8 to c u work so hard to clear out doubts of so many aspirants.. ur dng a gr8 job dear. i wanted to enquire 4 a friend… she has recently completed her Biotechnolgy Engineering and has secured one of the top ranks for PG program in NIFT. she wants to persue a career in Apparel Design.. i wanna know the prospects and the best n average package of the program.. since its a new program, she is very dicey abt the same..kindly reply asap!

I m in 12th standard n I will b appearing for my NIFT B.Ftech tests next year . I have ordered for a postal course package from a reputed academy to prepare me better for my exams for NIFt. Mam , I wud like 2 knw if Delhi is as unsafe as people say. Also, I belong to a slightly conservative family so dey say dat environment and culture in delhi is not so appropriate.
Is B.Ftech really gud? I m interested in Fashion n basically wud like 2 b an entreprenuer……ma’am plz reply me soon……I shall w8 4 ur Reply.

i am a waitlisted in bftech(130 rank) i have been called for counselling for the vacant seats in nift kannur(vacant seat status SC-02 OBC-03) . will i get a seat?
if i get it then would it be better to do bftech from nift kannur or should i do b.arch from uptu(gen. rank 493) or aieee(gen. rank 4673)

firstly i wud like to thank u for openin such a helpful blog…maam i have secured AIR 39 in B.F.Tech…i have already taken admission in nift bangalore…actually my dilemma is that i was a science(PCM) student in 12th…nift was just a by chance decision and i hadn’t taken any coaching…i was trying for engg. earlier..maam my question is what are the prospects in this field…r the workin conditions good…and wat is the salary after a 5 to 6 yrs experience????

@priyanka: no. mftech doesn’t make you a designer. ‘Fashion design’ does. just chk syllabus.

@priyanka: u can do fashiond esign after btech.. though that’s would be pursuing a second graduation/diploma. For the rest.. liek which colleges offer fashion design, please do your research on google.

im doin btech in ICT, wanna do Mdes. pls answer my following queries:
1.Would doin the 4 yr ug course in designing at NIFT aft my 4 yr btech be foolhardy? I jus hv a feeling tat a PG would not make me adequately marketable. pls comment.
2.Of the three PG courses(MFM ,MFTech, Mdes), whic one s the most sought aft n financially promising course? I wanna go fr design but i heard tat Initial pay is very low. Also i want to start a fashion line at a suitable time. pls comment.
