Ok.. So that’s a table time clock. A clock you put on the table to check for time. OK.

Its too crafty. Little thought has gone into it. Since the target customer is a fashion designer, its just too direct to make a fashion model and paste her there on thermocol with the time showing on her chest. Its like making an Eiffel Tower to suggest Parisian style. I did that once. Heh heh…

If you see the date..Its hanging on her arm very arbitrarily..clipped on with pins. The model's legs are crooked. You can’t just put her in ANY clothes if you are focussing on the fashion aspect of it.

Its also a FLAT design. If it were to be hung on a wall, that would be understandable; but since it will be placed on a table, it will be viewed from all directions and this clock offers no side and back surfaces worth looking at. When you work, you are working with space, not a single surface. Its a model, not a drawing sheet. So I suggest that in many cases you should start your concept by determining an easy-to make 3 D shape. Think of the clock as a cube (not a square), as a pyramid (not a triangle), as a sphere flattened at the bottom (not a circle).

The primary aspect of the table time clock is showing time. It is important to

  1. Keep Time Prominent.
  2. Make it specially designed for a table.
  3. Convey the Fashion aspect.

The fashion aspect can be dealt with in two ways. One, you make it appealing to the fashion designer’s aesthetic sense, sense of style etc. which the girl responsible for this model has done. Two, you serve the requirements of a fashion designer like offering him a place where he can store pins and measuring tape etc.

Dude.. I am sorry..I’ll have to do a fast job.. I don’t have much time. Your table clock also lacks steadiness. It looks like it will topple over. Here are examples of what you could try.. (I’ll get back to it, Gotta Rush)

Back----

What routes could I take..

Why am I thinking of a clock which is also a pin cushion

Playing with the concept of time perhaps…

A clock to inspire..?

Time and Fashion design.. Time and fashion design

Late nights, bent and working over long tables on garments..Looks at the time.. a few more hours to go … A friend walks in.. the designer wants to show off his fine tools, table clock and fountain pen..

Will the designer look at the clock from front or from above..Its very likely that the table clock is viewed from above as the designer bends over his table and works on his patterns etc. Must be mentioned in the write-up. A slanting face then.. Or really a top-faced clock.

How about an elephant that gets olllddd with time… heh heh.. Designers enjoy having fun!

Or since it a designer, a clock inspired by very traditional fine art and craft techniques..

Wire work or something..

Still thinking… And gotta get back to work again (This may just be undo-able today.)

Is there a new way you can show numbers?

Look at this shape.. I like it, got it off the internet. You can make a steady base with a solid triangle..

about_time_rolling_clock.jpg

This image is just for inspiration as far as the shape goes. You can use plastic sheets to make this simple shape... Look, no thermocol poking out, nothing. Clean design. And maybe you could write text around it. Maybe with a mood for each hour and in between.. A way would have to be thought to use a few more materials in this..The clock may have hands or be a digital clock.. For this look i prefer digital. What if three such round surfaces are joined edge to edge to make a 3 D triangle.. One face showing time, The other showing date and the third.. I dunno.. Think of something.. The third could be a back surface used to set the alarm.. record reminders in. IS fashion design getting left out..? The colours could be a little more vibrant.. Layers of transluscent plastic..concentric circles.. pink, blue, green. The last circle in a set of three could also be a place the designer can use as a pin-cushion..ahhh..There comes my pin cushion.. Or better still.. It can have some rods poking out to throw rolls of thread around.. Now that gives you an opportunity to use materials, make a fashion designer specific clock, clean 3 D design.

I suggest you take some DST with you in your pocket - DOuble sided tape. You can use it to stick surfaces without ANY tape showing.

Here is another idea I have..

fad.jpg

A playful feeling. A button detailing to give it the fashion designer touch. The button can be a plastic cut-out with stitching over it. Before you start, I suggest you make a rough doodle of your model, a sketch and leave it there for the judges to have a look at later.

So how to make this..

The shape is a major issue here..

I think if you cut strips of plastic, they can be coiled to roughly make a shape like this.. To give some weight stuff paper balls or your socks inside. Yeah take off your socks,, stuff them inside. But yeah you cant use ur socks on the outside. That would be using a material you weren’t given as the foundation of your design. Unacceptable. The watch face, hands,, everything can be made with plastic cut-out and markers. The stands for spools of thread can be made with straws. Tell them the FUNCTIONALITY and the LOOK of your clock in your write up. And maybe MATERIALS.

Function – Apart from showing time, holding thread spools.

Look- A toy look for an upbeat mood. The object can be placed around anywhere.

Materials – The clock would be a soft toy like object, with a battery under it.

It would be great if you marked a battery slot under the whole model. DO all the cellotape sticking etc underneath..not right on top. You know the way you pack birthday presents. Ok, I have really spent far too much time over this. I hope its of some help to you guys. Best of luck!

Hey if you get thick sheets of thermocol.. you can also quickly make a block by sticking many squares together, like a loaf of bread and then quickly shaping the block to this roundish smooth shape - a rugby ball shape or the shape shown in my model above. I hope you can achieve it in good time. Its a great way to make all kinds of flexible shapes. Practice once at home with thermocol. You need good glue and something like sand paper. Take sandpaper in your pocket. If you do this thermocol scultpting thing, its a sure winner!

  5. I enjoyed your writing style and I’ve added you to my Reader. Keep these posts coming.

  6. hey..u’v mentioned in the blog above that we can use our socks to stuff our model… but wouldnt that be against the rules..as u said earlier, that we arent allowed to use our own stuff?

    please reply asap.!

  7. i hav cleared my nift written test. plz tell me how should i go about my preparation for situation test. i went through your blogs , but plz tell how can we make a model appear 3-d.??

  8. plz give ideas to design a stage for rock concert.

  9. @ sewika: u give me some ideas abt the rock stage.. i’ll take it from there..

  10. A rectangular stage with three of it’s sides connected to a ramp each.
Glass stage having dark water underneath to give it a little edge, large pic of a skull.
    Lights everywhere possible.

I’m unable to think of sumthin spectacular and different.

  11. Rock. Rock. Rock.
Let’s see. Large screens on either side. Dark water under the stage will probably not be seen by the crowd. A pedestal for acoustic solos. Some kind of shower above to release balloons or confetti on the entire crowd. Direct the lights. An LCD onstage for motion graphics/ video while the guys play.
Think of a new shape for the stage. Why 3 ramps? OK Here is the IDEA. A column in the middle on which the vocalist can stand and rise as it moves up. You will have to make a pullable column for that. Label it (PULL ME UP).
Or here is the real idea: Think of a theme and don’t just make a general stage. Base it on your theme. Rock performance huh>? Design for Guns and Roses. Make one good graphic of guns and roses with a marker and stick it on the background in a popping-out style. The sides of the stage can be guns with the barrel pointing at the audience. I know I am overdoing it.. but u get the idea?
I am trying to think of some interaction design in the stage.. Umm.. let’s see. Can you think of any? Some audience friendly thing? Let’s say a side area they release some people for dancing. A little below the stage but over the audience. This could be a cage you know.
Other themes you can take – A rock band called Night playing. Make a dome of artificial stars. Or a hemispherical background.
Or let’s say you write in your note that you have designed for Bhayankar Maut. The stage can be festooned with a few puppets hanging on the noose. Maut displayed all over. Man.. Do what you gotta do.. I am just beginning to hav fun with the idea! But in this case be sure to label the stage somewhere with Bhayankar Maut.
You can make speakers as cubes and just toss them on each other so that it looks like installation art.

Your write up could start with
A stage designed for a night with the rock band – Bhayankar Maut. Loud, delinquent and gory.
    1) The background is strewn with dead puppets.
    2) The stage descends to a lower level where the front row headbangers can jump on and go ballistic!
    3) Huge LCD on the sides show the action up-close.
    4) Speakers are aligned as objects d-art. Almost heaped on each other.

Get ready for some real noise as you can’t escape the onstage Maut.

  12. … continued: for the stars in the background poke ur pencil through the plastic sheet that forms ur background. That way u can make holes in the stiff sheet and give it texture.

ANother idea: TAke one element and repeat it. Like cut the shape of a shark fin. Then place two large fins onstage next to each other. Then other smaller wings fanning out.

Or fold one sheet like a chinese fan. open up the sheet. It will be like an accordian. Let the folds down from the stage saying these are bands on which light would be changing.

    SOme working rules:
    1) Make a definite element and repeat it – like a hexagon or spiral or triangle or cylinders taht u can make by simply curling the sheet.

    2. Try folding the sheet or crumpling it or twisting a strip and making ends meet.

  13. continued… Create the rock mood. what comes to ur mind when u think rock? guitars, bikes, drums, crazy lights, black, strong graphics, sharp, loud, messy, noisy, night, performance

what can u depict? guitar shapes can be used to make stage props. See what you can do.. Maybe before u begin ur situation test thing just list all the stuff that u associate with the topic.

Big thing – in ur write up u can make a small n simple brainmap on the side corner. Look up a word on http://www.visualthesaurus.com/ n u will see what i mean

  14. how about make a circular stage with an inner circle that can rotate. audience all around and the artist.FUNCTIONALITY- can accommodate more people in a lesser area. lights can over hang from an upholstery running across 2 ends in a semicircular manner (this is made of steel and needn’t be thick because lights aren’t heavy are they?).

  15. oh ya i also thought… maybe the whole stage could look lik a guitar and the ramp can be the fret board! and the tuning circles can be the lights!.

  16. You totally rock!

You think the judges would know who guns and roses or Maut are? If they don’t, they wouldn’t get the idea, would they?

  17. @ sewika: u will mention in ur write up tht u hav designed for so n so band. it can be a fictitious band too. dont leave stuff for judges to guess. tell them clearly in ur write up.

  18. @ swati.. u cud mention in the write up that the show wud be aired live and the cam would take top views. otherwise if u shape the stage floor like a guitar.. who will be able to see the design.. definitely not the audience screaming with their heads barely over the stage. But i like ur idea anyway!

  19. u rock malavika…it mus b fun living with such a creative head on ur shoulder!…i m envying it dude
