Jobs for Fashion Communication, NIFT students

View complete NIFT info at http://blog.malvikajain.com/nift-admission/

All the candidates who apply to the Fashion Communication program at NIFT are curious as to what jobs it will land them. Here is the article that tells you what’s out there for you. I am about to complete my fourth year at NIFT.<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->
There are some ready-made jobs and there are jobs that you will have to create for yourself. You study so many things in FC that you know a little of everything when you leave. The internships and elective courses at FC do push you towards you interests but it’s still a sea. It is your job to decide what exactly you want to do exactly and where you wish to specialize.
A big choice to make at the end of the course is whether you want to go right into fashion or not. For some, it’s not a tough call. Here is what my class of 35 people are doing.1 Advertising - Copywriters and Art
FC really helps you towards this career.
2 Fashion journalists for Elle, Marie Claire, Femina, Harper's Bazaar3 Fashion Photographers for magazines, newspapers, designers4 Fashion stylists at Elle, Marie Claire, Femina, F&A. Fashion stylists imagine and implement the look of a collection, or for a photo shoot. They collect the garments, props and compose looks for a romantic shoot in green lawns, or a grungy image for levi's or the entire Vogue magazine. According to Instituto Marangoni: Fashion stylists are experts of image and style. Their work is creative and mindful of trends; they must identify the finest styles and offer a well-coordinated image. Fashion stylists are essential to a collection's success.5 Graphic designers at various companies like K factor, Whitelight

7 Visual Merchandisers for brands like Benetton, Shopper's Stop, Madura. They do window displays, in-store display, sometimes even packaging keeping in mind the brand image, items to be promoted/ sold off first and ease+entertainment in shopping. It's about designing an environment and the customer's interaction with the brand.

8 Fashion Promotion (After post grad) - According to Instituto Marangoni: Fashion promoters plan the advertising campaigns and organise the product's promotion through the right channels. They organise presentations, events and catwalks reflecting the image of the company. They organise the press and public relations offices. Fashion promoters create links with marketing agencies, style studios, advertisers, graphic designers and service suppliers. 9 Fashion Brand Managers (After post grad)

According to Instituto Marangoni:
Brand managers produce a collection by defining its fashion contents, its price level and its target audience. Their job is to study the entire fashion panorama, define the competition, manage the development of a new collection and plan its promotion and distribution.

This is what you learn in FC -
Fashion Photography
Marketing, Retail Management
Branding and Corporate Identity
Journalism
Graphics
Visual Merchandising
Styling - Putting together the look of a model for lets say, a photo-shoot
Fashion forecasting
Studying fashion trends
Visual Merchandising
Graphics
Advertising
Computers - Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Pagemaker, Dreamweaver, Flash, Corel, AutoCAD, 3DMax which means you can create graphics, develop webpages, edit videos, do animation and do desktop publishing. What I have to think of now is about personal growth possible in the few streams I have narrowed it down to. But you know what, all the fundas dont work after a while. Its good to get in only if its passion that keeps you driving. Having made all the decisions, you have to be happy selecting garments for a model to wear for the photo-shoot, isn't it?

  8. hey malvika
i see you’ve been helping a lot of people which is great and im glad that i coud finally turn to someone for help. im currently doing my final year in visual communication and i was looking at a one year programme in “visual merchandising for fashion”. I would like to know what kind of preparation is required for the entrance tests, when they are held and also if its a good option.
I have also read in their website that a one year course in fashion retail management is available. Which would be a better option considering i have visual merchandising in mind?
Hoping to find a reply from you soon.

  9. @namrata: sorry, i dont know about the one year courses. i know about the 4 year UG design degree courses.

  10. Hi Malvika
I have completed my engg Btech in Information Technology but i am interested in fashion designing. Is there any short term course suitable for me in NIFT as i want to excell in Fashion designing. Or else can u guide me for the same..
    Hoping for ur reply asap

  11. hay malvika……ur blog has been really helpful to me……..i am in 12th doin science ryt now…….fashion comm. seems lyk an interesting course…….do u think one requires classes for the entrance xams??are the 12th board marks taken much into consideration at nift??and do u have any idea how much one approx. requires in their entrance xams n boards to get into a good nift colg such as the ones in mumbai or bangalore??n also do u have personal interviews n group discussions for admission into nift??

  12. @kajal:

Classes – no but u cud. I didn’t attend coaching classes but I did take mock tests with other candidates. That way I knew what to expect. Do a situation test class if u reach that level.

    12th marks don’t matter much

    No GD, no interviews

  13. hi…i gv nift last year n was qualified 4 situation test but cudnt attend it…now i m dng b.tech but vl olso gv nift nxt year…my doubt zz regarding d salaries aftr fd…n wat r future prospets…n wts d duration of courses n ol details??

  14. Hi Malvika,

Its good to see such an informative blog!!! I am quite delighted to chance upon the prospects of a BDes in Fashion Communication at NIFT. As for education, I am a qualified MBA from the UK with more than 6 years of professional experience. I am 31 and I am concerned if my age will act as a deterrent for someone who is just starting out and would simultaneously limit employment possibilities.

Hoping to hear from you soon. Thanks.

  15. @deep:
Age should not be a deterrant but i am very surprised that you should wih to pursue a 4 year course after such cool education. You may not enjoy working at the starting salary of 20,000-240000 rupees at all. Maybe you should go for a shorter course (check evening courses at NIFT), read up on your own and just start as soon as you can. get the technical knowledge, use the library like mad and start working.

  16. Hi Malvika,

    Appreciate your spontaneous response.

I was reading about the entry requirements for BDes in FC , and I may not be eligible for it as the upper age limit happens to be 23 for all UG programmes …too bad:-(… However, I can pursue a Masters as it comes without the upper age limit restriction… I was wondering it is possible for me to go for a PG programme directly, say the Master in Fashion Management course with my current educational background and work experience?

I understand your views on the salary issues, but its more of creative satisfaction that I hope to achieve … A shorter course will perhaps not be enough to open the doors of a successful career… plus I also have an MBA to bank on along with the MFM course ( if I get admitted)…. Please do share your views… Thanks

  17. @deep:
thanks for the info about 23 as the age limit. From what i have seen, most of the people who do Masters in fashion management, have non-fashion background.

  18. Hi Malvika,

It was wonderful writing to you and I hope you continue inspiring many more like me to pursue their heart’s desire. I must admit I have yet to meet someone who is as serious as yourself about answering individual queries, inspite of a work schedule which must be hectic.

Please do share any information that might be helpful for aspiring professionals.

Thanks a million for this noble endeavour.

  19. @deep:
    you’re welcome :)

  20. I am a BMM student, i did my internship at an online ad agency wrote for websites… I truly madly wanna work for a fashion magazine. But can i with my above education and experience? I m really confused please guide me

  21. @preeti: fashion magazine… ok. You must know you want to write for a magazine or do styling or photography. Once you know, you must apply for an internship (unpaid in your case) by visiting a fashion magazine’s office or finding out the correct person to contact. Look GOOD. To get an internship, you must show promise and potential. To show that, you must have some samples of your work.
If you want to write, have a few samples ready on topics like ’5 looks this season’, ‘the Chanel statement’ and ‘a review of shantanu n nikhil’s latest collection’.
If you want to do styling, or photography, have photos ready on themes like ‘the summer 09 look’.
for tips and insights, read Vogue and other mags properly, go through style.com
Find out top 5 fashion-writers, top 5 fashion photographers …
You can have your write-ups looked at by a senior NIFT student and get opinion.
    Go for it.

  22. Thank u very very much…!!!
No one ever answered my question so properly…
    Now everythings clear !
Thank you so much for your guidance.
    Thanks a ton…!!!!

  23. Hello Malvika,

    Hope you are doing good.

I plan to write the MFM selection exams for 2010-2012. It would really help if you know how can one avail sample question papers for the same. Does NIFT publish any?

Thanks and keep inspiring as always

  24. Hi Malvika,

I wanted to know if the following post graduation course “Fashion marketing” from Pearl academy good ? and can it help me to get a job abroad ? , I have done my graduation in commerce .

  25. @anshul: dunno about PG courses or Pearl.

  26. Hi Malvika,

Fisrt and foremost, i am utterly glad to have found your blog site. I have been breaking my head over research in Fashion Communication. I have almost found all the answers to my inumerable queries. Hats off to you! Really.
But there is still the question of comparison. Here’s my situation.
I’m a student in 12th grade, studying in DPS Shj, United Arab Emirates. For over a few weeks, i have been extremely confused as to what exactly to pursue. I am a 100% sure that it is going to be something related to Communication. Now whether i want to do Mass Communication or Fashion Communication is the big fat problem.
Initially i wanted to do Advertising. So i was willing to do BMS (Bachelor in Media Studies) which specialises in Advertising in the 3rd year, from the Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, Pune.
But i have a friend who’s sister is currently studying at NIFT, Delhi. She says the course is absolutely brilliant and also you learn a bit of everything. I love fashion and everything related to it. But then i feel a little intimidated and insecure when i see the competition in the field these days.
Now, is it better to specialise in a particular course [@ BMS] or be a jack of all trades [@ NIFT] ?
I have been hunting for councellars here but have been unsuccessful.

I hope i haven’t confused you because i am pretty much perturbed myself.

  27. @aashima: nothing to get intimidated abt.
    i am in advertising now.
if u are keenly interested in fashion, go for NIFT.. it will surely help. all the glam biz, the atmosphere will do you good.. where else will u have projects in Fashion Weeks?

But the technical knowledge is not super strong.. for that you should go to a fine arts college or so. In FC they do teach u web design, flash etc. but extra curricular and theatre etc. is very low in NIFT. But then as i said if its fashion u want, go for it.. its the stepping stone to fashion colleges in Paris, Milan, NY if you wish to pursue fashion further. but its not great level education, technically. This blog-post does show u where FC students end up.

In advertising yo can get in anyway.. even from economics background. a general communication degree is fine but having done some sort of specialisation liek fashion or web design or summat helps.

If you are halfway decent, dont feel insecure AT ALL. The few no. of seats does pose a crunch though. try NID for sure.

    i am not sure if i helped..hope i did. :)

  28. hi , im a gradutate in BBA.. i was wondering if fashion communication from nift is a gud idea. can u plz suggest me any intitution whr the course duration in fashion communication is less than four years. plz rep

  35. hi malvika!!

i have completed my 12th this year……and i am not sure whether 2 go for bachelor of fine arts or fashion communication thro nift , i want to pursue graphic designing or advertisment field. i knw dat nid is probably d best bt isnt fine arts as good if i do post grad. in graphics thro nid??……..plzzzzz HELP!!! :)

  36. Hi Malvika,

This is Romesh, am a Photographer based in mumbai. The reason to get in touch with you is, am planning to collaborate with stylist/designer, probably students from design institutes to put together a photo shoot to add to my and their portfolio. Please note this will not be a paid shoot, but they would not have to bear any charges. All expenses like studio hiring, make up/hair, model would be borne by me and moreover they would get images from the photoshoot in return to add to their portfolio.

If anyone would be interested in going with something similar, we can put together a theme like Bridal, Current Trends etc etc which would also help them establish as a stylist/designer to work on photoshoots etc.

You can see some of my work at http://www.romeshdhamija.com

    Regards

    Romesh

  38. wats d scope of MFM,as i have cleared it,,,what salary is offered to the students,is there any bright future as i am from an engineering background, but is interested in Fashion field. please tell

  39. hi malvika , i want to do mfm after my graduation , can you plz tel me about its scope now

  40. i gave my ISC this year and hve scored 94% ,i have got into NIFT …my rank is 360…i ‘m totally confused whther i should join nift or do an Eco honours ,could you please tell me which courses will i be eligible for with my rank? and wt are the future prospects like?

  41. Hi! I wanted to inquire about a couple of things. After securing an all india rank 200 in the NIFT entrance, what are my chances of getting Fashion Communication and where? What are the various post grad options that one can go for after completing B.Des Fashion communication from NIFT. My main aim is to join the advertising sector. I read in the prospectus that big ad agencies like O&M etc. also recruit people from NIFT. And lastly, is the course a regular degree programme or a diploma programme?
Thanks for the great blog, it is really very helpful!

  42. Hi atishay:
whr u’ll get FC .. i dont know. pls chk website for no. of seats in each centre. mumbai n delhi are most coveted centres. and FC n FD the most wanted courses. so lets say if thr are a total of x seats over the country, u can get FC if u have rank x.. or rank x+50 or x+100… (i think).

post grad options – any communication design post grad. since u get a degree u can go for CAT etc also. post grad at NIFT, NID, IIT, abroad..

ok..hi i am in advertising. FC leads directly to it. quite a few of my batch-mates went into advertising.

    it’s a degree course.. you’ll be a B.Des graduate.

  43. Hi,
I secured an All-India Rank of 380 and I wish to take up Fashion Communications, because that seems to be the closest call if I want to persue Graphics in future. Can you please let me know where will I get that course? If I have an option between Bangalore and Hyderabad, which one should I choose when I appear for the counselling? ( Delhi, and for that matter even Mumbai seems to be a distant possibility. )
Also, I want to give NID entrance next year. Will the foundation course be helpful or will I need to prepare for it separately?

    Thanks in advance:)

  44. And by the way, great blog :)

  45. Hi Vansh:
i am not sure if u will get FC at 380.
join NIFT and then give NID. Foundation programme helps but more importantly if you dont make it to the few seats at NID, you still have something in hand and can continue at NIFT. for hardcore graphics, chk out fine arts colleges like MS Baroda.. n Srishti. NIFT may be too fashion centric for your clear cut graphic design education needs. depending on ur bent of mind, ths fashion-centricity can b an advantage or a pain in the ass.

  46. thank u so much

  47. Hi mam..i got chance nift b.des. My rank 576 general. Do i get chance kolkata centre LD or FD?

  48. Hello malvika,
Thankyou so much for this entry.. i had always been so sure of what i wanted when i was “big” now that i’m here, i have no clue!

well, thanks again.. could you please specify the minimum rank one requires to get a seat in FC?

    xoxo
