Jobs for Fashion Communication, NIFT students

View complete NIFT info at http://blog.malvikajain.com/nift-admission/

All the candidates who apply to the Fashion Communication program at NIFT are curious as to what jobs it will land them. Here is the article that tells you what’s out there for you. I am about to complete my fourth year at NIFT.<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->
There are some ready-made jobs and there are jobs that you will have to create for yourself. You study so many things in FC that you know a little of everything when you leave. The internships and elective courses at FC do push you towards you interests but it’s still a sea. It is your job to decide what exactly you want to do exactly and where you wish to specialize.
A big choice to make at the end of the course is whether you want to go right into fashion or not. For some, it’s not a tough call. Here is what my class of 35 people are doing.1 Advertising - Copywriters and Art
FC really helps you towards this career.
2 Fashion journalists for Elle, Marie Claire, Femina, Harper's Bazaar3 Fashion Photographers for magazines, newspapers, designers4 Fashion stylists at Elle, Marie Claire, Femina, F&A. Fashion stylists imagine and implement the look of a collection, or for a photo shoot. They collect the garments, props and compose looks for a romantic shoot in green lawns, or a grungy image for levi's or the entire Vogue magazine. According to Instituto Marangoni: Fashion stylists are experts of image and style. Their work is creative and mindful of trends; they must identify the finest styles and offer a well-coordinated image. Fashion stylists are essential to a collection's success.5 Graphic designers at various companies like K factor, Whitelight

7 Visual Merchandisers for brands like Benetton, Shopper's Stop, Madura. They do window displays, in-store display, sometimes even packaging keeping in mind the brand image, items to be promoted/ sold off first and ease+entertainment in shopping. It's about designing an environment and the customer's interaction with the brand.

8 Fashion Promotion (After post grad) - According to Instituto Marangoni: Fashion promoters plan the advertising campaigns and organise the product's promotion through the right channels. They organise presentations, events and catwalks reflecting the image of the company. They organise the press and public relations offices. Fashion promoters create links with marketing agencies, style studios, advertisers, graphic designers and service suppliers. 9 Fashion Brand Managers (After post grad)

According to Instituto Marangoni:
Brand managers produce a collection by defining its fashion contents, its price level and its target audience. Their job is to study the entire fashion panorama, define the competition, manage the development of a new collection and plan its promotion and distribution.

This is what you learn in FC -
Fashion Photography
Marketing, Retail Management
Branding and Corporate Identity
Journalism
Graphics
Visual Merchandising
Styling - Putting together the look of a model for lets say, a photo-shoot
Fashion forecasting
Studying fashion trends
Visual Merchandising
Graphics
Advertising
Computers - Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Pagemaker, Dreamweaver, Flash, Corel, AutoCAD, 3DMax which means you can create graphics, develop webpages, edit videos, do animation and do desktop publishing. What I have to think of now is about personal growth possible in the few streams I have narrowed it down to. But you know what, all the fundas dont work after a while. Its good to get in only if its passion that keeps you driving. Having made all the decisions, you have to be happy selecting garments for a model to wear for the photo-shoot, isn't it?

  1. …and what are YOU doing?

  2. Hello,
I thought I would mention it here that all free sample papers and Mock tests are available at http://www.afdindia.com for those preparing for NIFT and NID entrance tests.
    James

  3. thank you..i really was blank about what i wanted to do.. but this article has surely helped me alot!

  4. also.. i’d like to know..how much do they make(salaries) annually? and is there an opportunity to go abroad?
    thank you

  5. Hi Isha,
Salaries start at 24k to 30k per month.. after that sky is the limit..really depends how far u get. The fashion industry ranges from boutiques to Bollywood, local export houses to international labels. I don’t think there is a huge possibility of being employed abroad directly after FC grad since the fashion industry is very competitive and the subject is so closely linked to national culture.
NIFT is a great ticket for post grad fashion education abroad. People have gone to London, Milan, Paris and NY to study. A few examples of courses that NIFT students are pursuing are – Luxury Marketing and Management (at Istituto Europeo Di Design, Rome), Masters in Fashion Buying (at Instituto Marangoni, Milan) and Textile Development and Marketing (at FIT, NY).

  6. okay.. if given a choice between NIFT ,NID and. other institutes such as sybiosis at pune which would be more preferable for fashion communication?
also…if you could tell me if it is really very necessary to join classes for the entrance tests? if yes.. then which ones would you suggest? or is the study material only enough?
the salaries you mentioned are monthly?
if i plan to pursue my post-grad abroad ,then is there a possibility of any sort of scholarship?
thank you. very much for answering

  7. FC would be best at NIFT (its the most fashion centric college in India AND located in fashion centres Delhi and Mumbai)
No need for classes, this blog offers tips in detail. Take a few mock tests though.
Yeah scholarships possible. I haven’t heard of scholarships offered by NIFT though. Smone got a scholarship from ferragamo n went to milan. You have to hunt ur own scholarships; look at colleges u wud be applying to for PG. NIFT does send ppl to study abroad as exchange students. That’s a great experience! You have to pay for ur travel, accommodation but not the tuition fee (in some cases).

  8. thank you so much.. also i liked the photographs in your blog!

  10. anisha..i had the same subjects as you in 11th and 12th :)
u can chk NIFT placements blog-post by me.
how far u can go with NIFT..well..u can be a graphic designer in a big design agency or start ur own. u can be at the top of fashion magazines as editor/ stylist. u can become a photographer. or an independent designer like rajesh pratap singh, manish arora. u could be part of exports, fashion merchandising, the business of swarovski/ levi’s/ arvind mills. u need to have the creative urge to explore avenues. in the is area..the path is not set like a doctor’s from qualification to qualification.

  15. Hi Malvika,
I am currently studying business and entreprenurship in the states. My dream would be to market an upscale fashion brand. With my knowledge of business, i would like to understand more about how a fashion industry works (without going into design), so i will be able to learn more about how to advertise these brands. I have researched on the Instituto of Marangoni in London, which seems very interesting. They have a Fashion Marketing course. Do you think this course would benefit me? Please let me know!
    Thanks,
    Vinita

  16. hi vinita, i am not informed enough to help you there

  17. oh btw.. fashion marketing course.. one’s at ….

IED organizes Luxury Marketing Management (English language) courses in Rome, Italy.

  18. Hey malvika,

I begin with the end in mind, and that is as an editor in a fashion magazine.

Ironically, I am a software engineer. i want to move to fashion because I realize that’s my thing. And its really confusing me now. An engg degree is no use when it comes to fashion courses (Bah). I searched everywhere. Pearl Academy Delhi, however, offers courses for people like me.
    My queries are :
    1) Do you know a place where I can do a post-grad FC course so it lands me to the doors of a fashion magazine ?
    2) If I dont get a journalism course , which post graduate course can I do, so I get myself close to editing (I know that’s probably too optimistic to think of) OR get myself somewhere that can lead my way to a fashion magazine.
    3) I do not mind doing any PG course in fashion and then doing the FC certification from NIFT for 4 months.
It is unfortunate that I do not have English hons degree. They want English honors :( . Although I think I have good communication skills.
Where do u think I can start ?
It would be great if you could help. I really need to rectify my mistake.Software is not my thing.Fashion is.
Please please show me the way.

    -Jay

  24. Hey,

I am about to get over with my final year in Electronics from DU. I was hoping to join some fashion design or photography course after that, if thats advisable after an honours course. Also what would be the eligibility requirements.
I shall be grateful if you could help me out to decide with the fact.

    Thank You
    Shruti

  25. hello i’m a fashion freak.. i’m 20 years of age n wanna work for fashion magazines as a writer …. can u plz guide me… i need it badly.. :(

  26. Hi kretYa.. this is what you do.. pick up cosmo, vogue, harper’s bazaar, elle, look at the people in the editorial.. call up the magazine.. ask for those people and get an appointment and first of all do an internship. Or try to get in touch through facebook. for example.. harper’s bazaar has a facebook page. At most, drop in at the offices. Before an appointment read up on fashion – style.com, nonsense on stilletoes blog, sartorialist blog. and keep some sample writing ready.
Or let me really simplify it for you and email u a contact.

  27. I am really glad finally i have someone who can help. i have been a regular reader for magazines like elle, vogue, cosmo, marie claire, glamour etc etc… but the real problem lies that 1stly i live in a city where people believe fashion is nothin more than minimal clothing. Besides fashion has always been my first love. i’m obsessed with brands i love collecting them as well has reading about then may it be salvatore or brikin bags form hermes. PRESENTLY I’M DOING MY BBA. i have called up a few magazines they say …. the problem lies with the city i stay in. frankly speaking i dont have the right qualifications. i need you to guide me as to wat sud my next qualification be. i’m ready to work very very hard. i can travel any n everywhere.. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS THE RIGHT APPROACH? (will getting in nift help me or sud i do an advertisin n pr diploma and then go into fashion for a better placement)
    eagerly waiting for ur reply.
