How the NIFT situation test workshop went

For complete NIFT info click here.

The total duration of my NIFT Situation Test workshop, held in April 09 was 5 hours.
(1 hour of tips and hand-outs with examples + 2 hours of model making + 2 hours of comparative feedback and suggestions)

I saw that most students missed out on giving themselves a theme despite of repeated reminders. And many didn’t leave time to do the write-up at all.

Topics I gave: Table lamp and Fashion show ramp

Here is what some of the candidates did –
hoodedlamp.jpg
The hooded lamp
+ve clearly designed for the study-table
+ve Integrity in design – all surfaces were triangular
+ve two light sources for yellow n white light
+ve neat and strurdy
+ve Very good intersection of planes for a complex 3D level in design
+ve multi-functionalty – pen holder between the two lights
+ve good use of materials
-ve No write-up

drawingroomlamp.jpg
The drawing-room lamp
+ve Three light sources
+ve The base depicted flowing golden cloth for a bronze n rust coloured drawing-room
-ve Needed more design by way of surface design (cutwork or Chinese lantern style)
-ve flimsy

lamplamp.jpg
The lamp lamp

+ve Good write-up about repeated use of 'lines' as a design element
-ve The representation of a lamp with a stand and shade. No more.

multilightlamp.jpg
The multi-light lamp

+ve Precise Target Customer – Teenagers

boxlamp.jpg
The Box Lamp
+ve Technically very sound with reflecting inner surfaces and wire outlet
-ve No idea, nothing new
-ve No write up
flowerlamp.jpg
The LED flower Lamp
+ve Theme based
-ve Flimsy
cubelamp1.jpg
The Cube lamp

-ve Bad sketching
-ve Flimsily stuck and joined materials
wlifwramp.jpg
Wills Lifestyle Ramp
+ve Good idea to write WLIFW on the background for a clear fashion connection
-ve Just a flat rectangle. No idea. Should have incorporated a theme.
smokingsnakeramp.jpg
Smoky snake ramp
Theme based – ramp for a Geisha collection fashion show
Elements of the Orient used – fans, snake
The ramp was unusually shaped like a curvy snake
Colour used wildly on the ramp. Fast job of sticking ripped paper bits
Mosaic ramp with light tiles (explained in write-up)
Very basic female model depicted on the ramp
At the end added the unused materials here n there as insignificant detail/ decoration
The write up started with a mood line
Rough doodle in the write-up
Write up mentioned elevated seats for the audience to look at the mosaic ramp
(This fashion ramp was made by me)

  1. i liked what u showed! it was interesting looking at different thoughts and ideas of different people. The conclusion i came upon after looking all this was, that you have 2 make use of the materials available over there creatively and in the best possible way…..and at the same time the idea should be explainable in itself!

  39. Gudafternun Ma’am
can u tell ..if i can use a invisible tape also instead of cello tape as we have been asked in call letter,my exam is on 24th aprill 2011..?
if we are asked to make a dress for a child..what can i write in my write up?

  40. @sarmistha: yeah go ahead use DST (invisible tape). if u had to make a dress for child, mention purpose of the dress (home or part). mention mood n style (kitschy or frilly n romantic or playful with lots of allowance for elbow bending, jumping and twisting and withstanding slides n swings).
Mention detailing, the trimmings.. how buttons, pockets are part of the concept.. for example if the theme you picked is animals, the buttons could be kitty faces n the pocket can be one kangaroo pouch types. If the concept you picked is nature, your pockets can be leaves, and each button can be a flower.
Tell how apart from aesthetics you have thought of the child’s movement and comfort, by making all buttons of soft fabric, nothing that pokes.
so on .. n so forth.. imagine, enjoy!
