FC, FD Expenses at NIFT

For complete NIFT info goto http://blog.malvikajain.com/nift-admission/

As of 2008, the fee of every semester at NIFT is Rs.25000. In total there are 8 semesters over 4 years.

Question asked by a candidate:

I want to opt for FC in NIFT New Delhi. So, do you think I will need to spend as much for FC as FD?  Since I am from a middle class family I can’t spend outrageously. Please give me an idea of expenditure in FD and FC.

Answers by Delhi pass-outs of 2008:

In FC we spent about 2000 rupees each semester on materials/ stationary. At least I didn’t spend more than that I think. You will spend quite a bit in the foundation year on stuff like clay/stationary/yarn/fabric/metal. Shilpa Wadhwa, an FC passout (2008) puts the figure at Rs 6000 per semester for expenditure on materials and stationary.

Share accommodation, it could come to 3k rent per month per person.

Here is what a recent FD graduate said about FD expenditure:

"Well. It is difficult to give any figure; it’s not even fixed. It depends on which semester u talking about. In the beginning it’s less. By the time u reach final year it could increase madly…but by that time u an expert and know the money saving methods very well like where to spend n how to spend.
So what I would suggest, if the person is slightly unsure whether he or she can afford or not, he should reconsider your joining FD. After paying for tuition, accommodation n meal there will come situations where you just can’t help it. You have to spend, especially when u see rich bitches spending like hell and coming up with flashy things….u know what I mean…life becomes miserable."

Don’t let this scare you! There are lots of non-rich people in FD.

The FD grad says that it’s tough to give a number, but they spend minimum 5 K on materials each semester. There are two semesters in a year. Another FD student gives the expenditure as "besides accommodation, about 6k a month. This includes food."

Another NIFT FD grad, Nirajana says, "Expenditure per semester would be difficult to say because the expenditure goes up and down. In the 3rd and 4th years when we do a fashion show it would be around 15 grand."

Answer by Anshu Jaiswal, Chennai FD pass-out (2009):  So I will start form the first year which is Foundation Programme, common to all NIFTians in UG design courses. The expense for living and food as I said can be around 50,000/year if u stay in NIFT Chennai hostel, which is fine with most of the student as most of them move out of the hostel only after the 3rd year. Instead, if you rent an apartment near the college, it comes to  2-3 k / month. The material cost is majorly in the beginning of the year which includes all the stationary items like colours - water , pencil, charcoal , acrylic, Plaster of Paris etc. It can come upto 4 k approx plus the surplus sheets which we have to buy all year round can cost some 3- 4 k more.  From the 2nd year FD starts; and buying muslin in loads starts. It comes to almost 2 k /month. From 3rd year (5th n 6th sem) onwards fabric is used. So, 3-4k / month on it. You can spend more than this, but cannot be less, because FD has so much of assignments and everyone wants to work on fabrics. Putting up a fashion show in the annual college festival called Spectrum will cost 2-3k approx. This expenditure totally depends on what design you want to make.  4th year (7th sem) is crucial. With the introduction of creative pattern making where we have to use almost all kinds of stuff and not only fabric to make garments I can’t ascertain the budget but let’s say it’s going to be more than 5-6k month. In the 8th sem you make your final Design Collection. If you are smart and want to spend less do designs like that. Take an appropriate theme and spend less, about 10 - 15 k and complete it.If you are doing an extravagant design, something avant garde then the budget will come around 70 - 80 k. (In college, it is a rule that a student cannot spend more than 70k on fabrics and 10 k on accessories for their design collection.)  One important thing is that the only medium of transport here in Chennai is auto. The buses are not at all good like Delhi. Major money is spent on traveling here, it’s very hard to tell the exact amount. It totally depends on your lifestyle; but yeah, I have told you majorly about the materials and everything.
