Details of Accessory Design course at NIFT

View complete NIFT info at http://blog.malvikajain.com/nift-admission/

Huge thanks to my friend Ankit for writing this post. He passed out of AD, NIFT, Delhi in 2009.

Basic requirement: Interest in tactile/practical/hands on implementation of design concepts and capacity to infer 2d into 3d.The course starts with object drawing and rendering in place, FORM STUDIES...verrry important - I think it’s the essence of a good AD guy... materials and techniques - theory and simple practical assignments like woodwork...simple tools...complex machines-lathe/drilling/sheet cutting/moulds/casting/dies/heat forming etc.

Design methodology:

Starts around the end of the 1st sem (sem 3) and involves getting the student to start processing random creativity or ideas with a process. Includes data collection/ research/ analysis/ filtering/ design brief/ conceptualization/ presentations (LOTS OF THEM)/ mock ups made of paper/wood/bleh bleh/ and then the final prototype -- the closest possible thing to the real product. All this is done in the design lab. And it’s is all judged by the jury finally.

What you learn in AD:

History of design, presentations-fun exercises, field trips, Introduction to photography, Specialization in product photography, fashion forecasts, craft cluster initiative in which students make trips to Jhabua, Bagh, Hoshiarpur, Haryana, Farukhnagar, Chamba and then do a design project based on the trip.

Product graphics with logo design, Making real products from prototypes, Techno aesthetic detailing, technical drawing with ortho/iso/rendered views of small complex products.

Learning design softwares Corel, Photoshop, Director. Rhino, 3ds max.

Basic marketing, management and technical theory classes with written exams.

The excess lectures are big bores when students should be out seeing stuff available in the market and using it. But then, no one is stopping you from getting out there.

The laboratory is always open during modules where lab work is needed. So u can wok whenever and however you wish, in class or in the laboratory or outside. Just that the work should be completed.

Faculty:

Mostly internal faculty with some visiting faculty. Decent. Some of the faculty is made of young passouts. So the environment is friendly and informal with them. Jobs get done but you need to push your cause....like fieldtrips, extension of lab timings, extra inputs in classes.

Big trump card in Delhi: ANNA (Tool lab n prototyping specialist... Mr.Murugan)

Scope:

Retail and Visual Merchandizing is a big new thing for AD. It’s really coming up and AD people are great for it with their technically sound base with design sense. Comes useful in furniture and lighting solutions, especially in Delhi.

AD is versatile and many career options are open in retail and home interiors after the course. You can get involved with making appliances. Or enter design studios/design export houses as people who can overlook an entire sequence of processes from the idea to the final thing.

Overall advice:

Join it...For products n accessories, it’s good after NID.

  5. hi malavika
my daughter is doing her ad in nift delhi this year . she had a chance to join ryerson in fc but we felt nift was better .she wants to do her exchange programme in ryerson ,when should she apply and what is a twinning programme? can she come to ryerson for fc if she is in ad now?

  6. Hi honey,

Your daughter can totally apply for FC at Ryerson. A friend of mine from the tech course at NIFT went and did graphics at Ryerson in an exchange programme. But why should she be chosen over an FC student to do the exchange programme? She will have to make a strong case by writing a good Statement of Purpose.

In AD, a lot of technical stuff is taught that your daughter may not wish to miss out on if she is going to be a product designer finally. If that’s not her clear aim, she should totally apply for FC in Ryerson. As a second choice on the exchange application form, she should choose an AD exchange programme to somewhere else, as AD to AD will be easier.

You can read details about exchange programmes on my blog-post about the same. Go to the NIFT page on this blog.
