Play Clan was started with the idea of channeling all the thoughts and hardcore fun, ‘playfulness’ into a store; sharing the jokes and mood you will find in our design studio. The name came easily as we had a very clear aim behind the store – To Play. As the idea was born, so was born the concept of a clan with a distinct identity and community feeling. In this clan everyone was similar as they wished to cut off from the ordinary world and play (each in their own way). Thus Play Clan became a world of ‘clones’.

One of the team-members designed the clone. He sketched, slept and breathed the clone as he drew it in romantic and flirtatious, angry and spiteful, playful and buoyant, dreamy and meditative moods.

Later a short film was made where the clone invents the wheel while playing around. In doing so, more people at Illum jumped into the Clan – Animators and 3 D modeling pros. Watch the film @ http://youtube.com/user/theplayclan

The team thinks of a theme for the store each month. Every alternate month the I.S.T – Indian Standard Tamasha theme is explored. Many foreigners have visited Play Clan and been delighted with the Indian-ness over the I.S.T wall-art and T shirts. The website www.theplayclan.com states “Ambassadors, autos, evening chai n gossip, gali galouch, Sab chalta hai attitude etc etc. We start our I.S.T. Collection with the place where ministry resides and autos collide, where metro unites, and black money hides. See a loud, brash dilli collection. You will either love it or hate it.”

Another theme – Loveless was thought of at the end of February 2008 when everyone was sick of Valentine’s day, love and mush. All of us came out with our break-up stories, doodles and thoughts on lovelessness. As the website explains “Love is overrated. So this summer we decide to burn some teddies, puncture the heart shaped balloons and devote an entire season to lovelessness. We bring in some loveless monsters, plant cactus instead of roses, fill the ledger with the account of lovelessness and sing suicidal songs. All the lovesick junkies are advised to visit play clan for a dose of anti-love merchandise to support our cause.” Check out loveless crimes and punctured and bandaged hearts at the store.

The ORIGINAL design offered in the Play Clan store makes it one of a kind. You can be sure that all the ideas and spunk of Illum design studio go into PLAY products and you won’t find products like ours elsewhere in India, or the world.

One of the key features at Play Clan is to keep the design fresh so that the visitor finds new items on every visit. The collected in refreshed every two months with new themes like Dilli, Loveless and I.S.T.

The coffee shop is abuzz with activity with a softboard that announces “All IPL matches being shown here”. The target group at the coffee shop seems to be girls of 13-17 years of age. They don’t pause at your table; they don’t acknowledge your order. Instead they just float away with no nod, no ‘OK,’ nothing! And they are not under-staffed. Service is really slow. Part of the food comes first. They forget about the rest, they really do! We asked about the hookahs and they launched into an elaborate hunt for the correct information. Finally, when we reminded them, it was just a matter of handing us the hookah-menu from a table next to us. It’s a pity when a well fashioned place where gardeners have done their bit, special chairs have been imported and bathrooms are well maintained; when such a place falls apart because of poor hospitality.<u1:p> They could do with better menu design too. (On a second visit, the waiters were much more responsive than earlier. They were nice enough to let us take photographs of the place freely). </u1:p>

The room that can be booked for parties is really gorgeous in funky opulent style. Big enough for 25 people, just small enough to keep it cozy and intimate. It has golden fabric pasted on walls, super high back red couches (as if from a gangster movie) and black leather chairs that are so super kinky. The backs of the chairs have interlaced chains that looked like the lacing at the back of a corset. And the chandelier is in red glass, like someone mixed wine and light together. Good job!

Next we saw she was playing with its intestines.

Actually, they were helium balloons with small LED lights all along the string and as the balloons floated high up, the lights swayed in the air. From far it was just lights in the air. The world has changed and we have modern wonders. In India, we visit forts and temples and here in Canada, the attraction is an antenna! Ok, so it’s the tallest antenna in the world.

It does give a feeling that you are going to fall through.

After enjoying beautiful views and being whipped by the wind up there, we went downstairs to enjoy the movie simulation experience. It was not advisable for people with weak hearts and we could just raise our hand and wave it if we wanted the simulation ride to stop. so i was suitably tingly and thrilled before the ride. At least we could stop it. In India, if you climb onto a giant wheel all the screaming and crying and bawling will not stop the giant wheel until its paisa vasool for you! My uncle and I sat in a mini theatre in chairs with seat belts. The movie started playing - it was an animation from the view of a person on a roller coaster. We went down chutes and landed in water amidst crocodiles and logs falling down over us. And while this happened, our seats jerked sideways and forwards according to the motion in the video, water jets sprayed down at us and something lashed at our feet, quite like crocodiles nipping at your ankles mildly. The best part, however, was my uncle screaming like a 5 year old! Priceless!

After vsiting the CN Tower in Toronto, my Uncle and I went to an arangetram. Whats an arangetram? I didn’t know. Never attended one in India but did get introduced to one here in Toronto. I wondered if I would see any interesting Indian guys in the crowd.

An arangetram is the first formal performance of a Bharatanatyam trainee. It was the arangetram of Reena Mohan, the daughter of my uncle's friend. Well, ok.. I sat down in my seat wondering what was in store for me. As the performance went on, I swayed my head side to side with the taal and music occasionally. After all, I was the true blue Indian in the crowd, just 20 days old in Toronto, and was supposed to be knowledgeable and appreciative of Indian arts more than others! In an interval between performances, some Canadians were doing a good job of understanding the mudras or hand gestures in the row behind me. They identified the ones for suffering, removal of sorrows, crown but got stuck after that. "What this?" the guy wondered. I felt very good educating him and saying that it was the mudra for a flute, the symbol of Lord Krishna. You know, the way you explain saying Krishna, RamA, karmA, niravanA.

The performance was very enjoyable. Every movement of the dancer told a sentence in a story. It was not incomprehensible beautiful dancing. It was like watching a movie, wondering how the story would unfold and her dance, showed little nuances and turns and twists in the conversation between the characters of the plot. For example, in my favourite piece, which was called Idai Vida, the heroine berates her lover for coming home late and says that she can detect signs of infidelity. As the dancer hopped forward and plucked something, looked at with horror and threw it aside to look up and ask 'Whats this?' i could see that she had picked up a long strand of hair from her beau's body and was questioning him about it. Then she asks him to leave and as her eyes follow a path towards the imagined door, you can imagine a young solid man walking towards the door dejected and (perhaps) sorry.

(Photograph of Reena Mohan, taken from her brochure. The photographers are Sanjay Ramachandran and Manpreet Sokhi)

The dancer Reena Mohan is a young girl in her third year of college. She looked very beautiful while performing on stage. I have the prejudice that classical dances that demand flexibility, grace and stamina should only be done by fit petite girls and not sticks or tubs. Reena has already performed onstage many times. However, to be very critical of a fantastic dancer, she was a little raw as she couldn’t hold tough poses very long, like the pose of Nataraja. A bit wobbly there. I remembered the performances of Sonal Mansingh and Birju Maharaj that i saw on two different occasions at NIFT as part of Spic Macay events. I must say that Spic Macay is doing a fantastic job, exposing people to larger than life performances. These performances may be the only time they get to watch a Sonal Mansingh or Birju Maharaj performance because at other times, a evening out means planning a movie or dinner or booty-shaking at a club.

Nothing like Sonal and Birju (Heh heh..). They take you out of yourself so that you feel like you are a taal or ghungroo or some magical element on the stage while they perform. They both explain what they are doing and there is no lack of completeness or involvement in their performance. You must catch it if you get an opportunity.

The arangetram ended with a long series of heartfelt thank-yous, some tears and an enthralled but i-want-to-pee! crowd. As Reena's teacher - Lata Pada was thanked and praised, she went around stage picking up small bits and pieces of broken costume jewellery, scouring the floor and swooping down on detected fragments quite oblivious to the songs being sung about her. I don’t know if that is normal or is it just me!

As I listened to the closing speeches, I thought that endurance, discipline, practice and devotion to an activity does pay off, Here was her father on the stage so proud of Reena. I made a quiet promise to go to the gym regularly. The woman next to me decided to do her sitar lessons regularly. The man next to her checked his watch. And the man next to him thought he would do yoga regularly.

The performance brought back memories of my training in Bharatanatyam. We never really understood what we were doing. I was in class five then. The teacher told us the story we were dancing and emoting to. But not much about introduction, the end and the meaning of the performance we did on stage. I remember her best as a tyrant walking around 40 girls with a stick. We had to squat in aramandi positions and hold it for five full minutes. You stand up and you would get a rap on your calves. You may call it part of the deal - teaching discipline by being hard or you may call it pure tyrrany, its your wish. Like Roald Dahl, when I look back at the bad experiences of childhood, i do it with a chuckle. It seems to be the modern fashion to drag all that into the present under the excuse of the lasting scars of trauma. Read ‘Going Solo’ by Roald Dahl and all about warming the toilet seat for seniors and getting bullied by school teachers. I have to admit though, hell is only nice in retrospect. Well, I have deviated from the main focus of this write-up a lot. But then, if you noticed the blog is called ‘Malvika’s ramblings’!

I can appreciate the culture, the many armed goddesses, gods who get angry and destroy the world, our stories, our recognitions of all kinds of rasas and a mythology that is so all-inclusive of life with jealous lovers, chiding mothers, gopis with crushes on Krishna, philanthropists like Annapoorne - the goddess of grain.

Ahaa! Now that was a good movie.
When I went to watch Chak De I kind of knew what to expect - rivalry in the team, one killing loss in the game, injury of a good player which gave a lesser player an opportunity to prove herself, an inspiring coach speech. I must say the movie went far beyond my expectations and there was a special tadka in it since it was Indian. No hamming with patriotosm, just the correct pinch of it. Indian languages, practising with facilities that are sub standard on the international scale, the India Gate circle as a running track, the lack of faith in "women running around in knickers" - it made the movie very different from any other sports team movie from Hollywood.
The movie pushes women and their self esteem ahead, the girls even beat up eve-teasing men. Yet the movie is not a feminist's delight and there is a good dose of sportsmanship from both men and women. The excitement builds up, the penalty shoot outs are moments of silence and anticipation and quick heartbeats. I found myself cheering and clapping and having to remind myself that it was only a movie with takes and retakes.
Must watch movie. Paisa Vasool.

Attended half of OSIANs film festival, from the 20th to 25th of July. I would wake up and really get cranky about procuring food. I had nothing to do and no will to work, having just finished my internship. The only highlight in the day was the time spent in Audi 1, 2, 3 or 4 at Siri fort in the darkness catching movies. Soon I was craving for AC, fridge and Mummy and I hit home in Chandigarh after half the film festival was over.
It was good to watch the thin Neville Tully around the festival with his light cotton, well ironed clothes and the characteristic loop in his posture.

I caught the following films-
Curiosity killed the Cat
Dor
Fourteen
Tender is the Wolf
Driving to ZigZigland
Where to
Vanaja
Frozen
Mr and Mrs 55
Cafe Lumiere

If you watched any of these films do give your opinion on it as a comment on this blog.
Some films had a very strong plot that kept the viewer glued to his seat while others seemed like drifters with a surrealistic touch. I am a fan of strong plots and films that are too abstract lose my attention.

Vanaja (Telegu), Frozen (Shot in Ladakh), Dor and Mr and Mrs.55 (Guru Dutt) were the Indian movies I watched.
Vanaja is the story of a fisherman's 15 year old daughter and how she tries to climb up in life. She works at an influential woman's house as domestic help and wins a bet against her mistress to learn classical dance from her. Vanaja is at the verge of womanhood. Its crazy how certain scenes titillate you without any skin show. Its mind twisting. A simple story otherwise, very interesting to watch with lots of Andhra Pradesh landscape and lifestyle to observe.
Frozen has very very very beautiful shots. Its all in black and white. The snow, the glare of the sun in frozen Ladakh, the wolf like dogs make it a beautiful calender. No story. No fun.
Mr and Mrs 55. Fat and happy and beautiful Madhubala. Guru Dutt in a lighter mood and Johnny Walker flirting with Ms Julie by singing songs with her while crawling under office desks. Loved the movie.
Dor - a Nagesh Kukunoor movie with Ayesha Takia, Gul PAnag and Shreyas Talpade. Strong story. Beautiful shots. Great film in too many aspects to point out.

Fourteen was about crazy adolescents in Japan. It was also about adults coming to terms with the craziness of their own childhoods. Didn't identify with it as we Indians are still a sane lot in our teenage lives except for the occasional young guy who features on reality shows like Deewanagi.
Cafe Lumiere - another Japanese movie. Boring. Japanese movies are non-noisy non-pushy like Japanese people themselves. They pause. One scene was shot with a girl bending and putting on her shoe, stopping to think and finally does up her laces to sit up straight and thinking and then finally going and pulling out her cycle from the stand to pedal away. The way they make films, the way Japanese people shoot scenes and the way they give the viewer lots of room for thought is a breath of fresh air for people accustomed to racy Hollywood. Sounds are like water dripping, the sound of putting down a tea cup on the table or the short answer "Hai (yes)" to a question.

The Chinese movie Curiosity Killed the Cat is one of the movies I enjoyed the most. It is the story of betrayal and revenge. Main characters - a man, his wife and his mistress. It is all about she knows and she knows that she knows but she doesn't let him know that she knows, he doesn't want to let her know. The same scenes are shown again and again but each time a new angle in the story has been revealed to you so that you see it in a new light each time. Its a whodunit. Very well made film that grabs you by your eyeballs.

Tender is the wolf (Tunisian) had me cringing with its rape scene. Its about weird characters, a girl who takes revenge and even makes up with one of the men after rape, a girl with no fear and lots of spunk, a mentally sick albino, a coward who is beaten to pulp and rushed to hospital by strangers in a trash wagon. The story of the movie is made up of the happenings of one night. It is a very involving movie.

Where to - strikes a chord in the heart of anyone who longs for home. Its a 12 minute film on an immigrant taxi cab driver.
Drivingto Zigzigland is a movie made in USA but the theme is not USA. Its inclusion in OSIANs is justified by the fact that the main protagonist belongs to Jerusalem and this affects the thought-base of the movie. This man too is a taxi cab driver. Each time he tells his passengers he is from Palestine it strikes up a political debate or calls for a history lesson. So he prefers to say he is from Zigzigland and even gets away from it. The passengers are often racists - not the extreme types, but the everyday types - you and me. The film has comedy, sadness and damn! kick-the-object-closest-to-you, bang-your-fist moments. It was the best film I watched at the film festival. It was introduced by the director and cast of the movie which was an honour.

Waiting for a movie to start- Looking around - silver haired flowing tresses women with silver jewelery and exclamation mark bindis on the forehead - the gaggle of students- a woman from some country left for you to guess with a scary spice hairdo sitting in the seat in front of a short man - the old man who sang along lustily with all the songs in the Guru Dutt's movie - the people sitting around that old man who did not have the heart to ask him to stop although they are very sensitive to the backseat chatter in a movie usually - the security guards at the door who were very sincere in their duty but a little scared lest they be stopping some high and mighty dignitary who is a chief guest for the movie screening and not to be disallowed anything - the aunty sitting in the food court handing out coupons to soggy bhelpuri - the sound of the projector running just before the video appeared on the screen - the gol gappa fellow outside making hay while the sun shone by doubling the price of his aloo tikki and papri chaat and chutney burger - the art student studying the posters and understanding the development of painting to printing techniques over the years - fearless Nadia - Lawrence of Arabia - toilets that don't lock from inside- beautiful signage, direction pointers.
