Collectible LP records

I found a huge stack of LP records at my grandad’s place when I visited him last. He has had them for 40 years, long after his turntable needle went missing; and here is how he got them. He was visiting Russia and in those days, the rouble was not converted back to the rupee on returning to India. He had to spend it all. He roamed the markets looking for anything to spend his money on. However, it was the days of communism and there seemed nothing except ice cream and music records to buy. And that’s how the Jain family ended up with a whole variety of piano concerts, gospel music and Doris Day, Joan Baez, Tom Jones melodies. Great stuff for mixing. DJs, collectors... interested?

Diwali recap

Is it mist or smoke

The beginning of winter

Or the airy remnants of firecrackers?

Is Laxmi coming or going?

Does she prefer dry fruits (kishmish kaju then kishmish then kaju…)

Or a box full of sweets?

Will spending 4 hours over a slow flame

Turning the moong ki daal ka halwa this side and that

Entice her with its aroma?

As friends come over,

You show off your rangoli

Everyone stands and grins

The predictable glow of happiness, togetherness, neighborliness

Flashing smiles, flashing jewellery, dazzling saris,

Embroidered kurtas

It’s a hectic affair

Making stacks of barfi boxes

Handing clothes to the gardener, electrician, milkman and driver

Directing young agile guys in laying the string of lights nicely on the walls

Soaking the diyas and filling them with thick mustard oil

And finally, ending up a friend’s house

Laughing, doubling and cackling, slapping and hoo-hooo-hoooing

And tiring yourself to a beauty sleep in all the finery

As the last diya glows outside, dim but steady.

A play to perform

I am scouting for a play to perform on stage. Please recommend one to me. Here are my requirements -

Contemporary

Offbeat

Interesting storyline, with strength in concept, like a man who has a list of things to do, or flashback within flashback within flashback, or repeated scenes ... each time from someone else’s perspective ...changing the storyline altogether, a murder mystery, an ‘are u trying to seduce me mrs.robinson”..

Highly intriguing

Out in Delhi

Some places in Delhi, mainly south Delhi, for people new to the city and looking for action. Do add to the list with your own recommendations or opinion.

Café Morisson

South Ex

Pub

Rock music. Casual. No dance floor but people dance. Fortnightly DESU nights – trance on the upper floor. Music is too loud for real conversation.

Recommended.

Mountain biking in Ladakh

Appreciating the beauty of rugged mountains, silent deserts and powerful rivers is no fun until you conquer it all; or at least get the feeling you have. Miniscule and armed with Target Firefox cycles, we did a 250 km cycling ride in Ladakh, stopping at vantage points to look back and feel good about the distance we had covered. Except that one time, cycling the steep slope towards Lamayuru, when we would look back after 15 minutes of sweating effort to see doll-like Ladakhi women right behind us on foot; after EVERY 15 minutes.

The trip was organized in Aug-Sep 2008 by YHAI (yhaindia.org).

Which cycle to buy?

Calling all the Cycling enthusiasts, particularly in NCR/ Delhi ---

Winter 2008-09 is starting and afternoons will soon be bearable. It would be the best time to pedal across North India. Let’s plan from casual Sunday rides to week long rides in the Himalayas to cycling to Pushkar Mela. In looking for like-minded cycle people, I came across two Delhi groups – Delhi Critical Mass and Delhi Cycling Club by ITDP. Maybe the two are connected at some level. I haven’t explored them yet. Drop in a word/comment; Get linked if you are up for a ride.

Click here for a calendar of cycling expeditions in India.

I need help in buying a cycle.
Budget - 10K-15K
Requirement - Long distance mountain biking + Portability
I am tall - 5ft 10 inches
Looking for very dependable, high quality gears and chain
Please recommend a suitable model, also
the best cycle stores in Delhi that offer a range of accessories.
I found Target Firefox quite comfortable but have been told I can go for still better cycles.
Would like to test ride the cycle in Delhi before placing an order.

One thing I learnt - Figure out whether you want to cycle off-road on slopes or you want to go fast on flat roads. MTB bike with fat tyres for the former, Road bike with thin tyres for the latter.

Beginning

Hi R,

I guess winter has begun in the US... There is a nip in the air in Delhi as well. And I love it. Season for gorgeous coats and jackets, razai cuddles and sparkly bonfire parties, and rickshaw walas huddling around smoky fires on pavements with bidis.. Does it snow where you are?
